JALOPPY-OWNER'S MANUAL, LP, 1997, USA

An array of funhouse mirror inversions and candy coated manias arranged like a series of exquisite corpses and extruded during one furious and compressed 20 hour episode of weed and caffeine fueled malarky, Owner's Manual continues my shares of material by Vas Deferens Organization and its satellite projects, this one being the second outing by this particular concern, one which was developed as an extension of Matt Castille's production work on two LP's of loner psych weirdity by his one-time roommate J. Bone Cro (the first of which will be posted soon), with Jaloppy being the aptly monikered vehicle for VDO'S jerry rigged absurdist overhauls and de/re-constructions of J. and his bandmate's source material. Heard with twelve years hindsight, the debt to the Texas psych tradition seems palpable in a way that really isn't apparent elsewhere in our work. It also, by dint of its collision of psych pop song structure and surrealist acid mangle perhaps jibes more with the work we've done recently in Shits And Giggles alongside Ariel Pink than most of our other outings, though the approach here is much more rough and schizophrenic.

STORM BUGS-A SAFE SUBSTITUTE, TAPE, 1980, U.K.

Many thanks to Philip Sanderson, one half of these legendary fringe dwellers and proprietor of the equally renowned Snatch Tapes for providing this crucial lost piece of the Storm Bugs puzzle, a follow up to my post of his Carriage Return project. Dunno whether this tape or their Table Matter single was officially their debut (they're both listed as 1980), but this is everything a fan of left field D.I.Y. song structure perversion (U.K. stylee) could hope for. Much of what's heard on A Safe Substitute (fragments of which would re-appear elsewhere) were generated from that great old British analog beast, the VCS3 synthesizer, a machine used to more tonal ends by the likes of Franco Battiato and Pink Floyd and here providing swaying pendulums of corroded bloop, greyscale warble and hollowed out rhythms triggered from filter fucked arpeggiations, upon which they graft passages of alternately morose and plangent song structure fragmentation.

NOTE: Link removed as this is due for reissue shortly on Harbinger Sound.

THE FIBONACCIS-TUMOR/SLOW BEAUTIFUL SEX/PSYCHO, 12" EP, 1982, USA

These art warped kitsch pop maestreos were one of the great and sadly unsung high water marks of the L.A. underground of the 80's, their marriage of Maggie Song's witheringly arch and sarcastic lyrics and high camp delivery with kitsch to the nth power Casio wave being something for the ages. I really can't imagine screwy new wave art pop being much more enticing than the track Slow Beautiful Sex. This EP was a bit of a grab bag however, Tumor being a somewhat uncharacteristic though fun stab at Downtown NY-like art funk while Psycho is a cover of Bernard Hermann's theme music from same. Their Civilization And Its Discotheques LP and Terrorvision soundtrack will follow over the next few weeks...

FLIGHT-INCREDIBLE JOURNEY, LP, 1976, USA

The link for this has been down for a while elsewhere, so I couldn't resist reviving this beast. The whiplash inducing dimension of sympho proggery that Flight operate within is distinctly American, with a sound that mates relentless guitar and whizzing synth prog ferocity to Mahavishnu-cum-Moreira fusionoid twists; the conjunction landing 'em somewhere between VIola Crayola and Shadowfax's Watercourse Way, but with added horn chart bombast. This damn thing scarcely ever comes up for air; just cascade after cascade of crashing intensity. Absolutely toe curling and one of the finest prog units this country ever produced.

HARALD "SACK" ZIEGLER & E*ROCK-MIND AS MASTER, 3" CD, 2000, GERMANY/USA

Ziegler is a long time cassette culture operative, cornerstone mover of the Cologne electronica axis (both as a member of Sack & Blumm and as a sometime contributor to Mouse On Mars) an orchestral French Horn player by trade and one-man universe of playful eccentricity by practice. On this EP, he's collaborating with a like minded quirktronica operative in the form of Audio Dregs label head E*Rock, their work here using martial arts as a conceptual hook on which to string five charmingly goofy miniatures, all bearing a strong streak of that pastel peculiarity that Ziegler had just finished plying the previous year on Sack & Blumm's eponymous debut, which I've shared elsewhere.

THE THIRD VDOANDSOUND VINYL AUCTION

Just another little notice to let those of you that still collect original vinyl know that my next round of rare albums for auction went up today, including a one-0f-a-kind handmade version of Metabolist's Hansten Klork LP created for Steven Stapleton,  a hyperlinked listing of which can be found Here

FRUSTRIERTE KONSUMENTEN-LIVE IM FLOZ 18.10.82, TAPE, 1982, GERMANY

Pots and pans meets knees and elbows in the cracked musical universe of these "geniale dilettanten" fringe dwellers, their militantly untutored tactics full of scrabbly and tenuous gestures, arch whimsy and decrepit pong-blip sequences running on low batteries.

DAVID MOSS/BAIRD HERSEY-COESSENTIAL, LP, 1977, USA

A damn rare and little known early treasure from dazzling improv drummer David Moss, whose albums have been shared elsewhere on MS. Coessential features his signature cockeyed conniption fits and collapsing rhythmic densities, though his glossolalian vocal theatrics are kept more in check than usual as sparring partner Baird Hersey lays out acidic string tangles and charred low volume slow burns triggering everything from unexpectedly delicate gamelan-like textural accumulations to concentrated explosions from him and ultimately landing the two of 'em in an atypical and entirely mindblowing round of Dzyan cum Terje Rypdal lysergic astral jazz.

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE-KRAWALL IM SCHWEINSTALL, LP, 1981, GERMANY

Jeez...1981 wasn't exactly a banner year for Krautrock, but like fellow stalwarts from the Uli Trepte/Spacebox/L.S. Bearforce axis, these long lived hippy Polit-Rock militants (whose astonishing previous album Fruhling Der Kruppel from four years earler I shared just recently) refused to cease their mission or allow the tides of Neue Deutsche Welle tastes to impede their desire to kick up a flabbergasting acid rockin' art prog shitstorm to accompany their scathing political commentary, if anything further ramping up the hard burning frenzy heard on Krawall Im Schweinstall. Just...wow.

SKALDOWIE-STWORZENIA SWIATA CZESC DRUGA, LP, 1977, POLAND

Nope, I won't pretend to be an expert on Polish prog, but these fellas were evidently one of said country's original beat-era rock units, morphing over time and many many albums (this one seems to be their eleventh) into the elaborate and borderline rococo synth whizzing and sympho swirling proggery on display here. It is a bit of a mixed bag though, with charming Brian Auger-like organ vamping and gorgeously enveloping key theme bliss ala Italy's Planetarium sharing space with with some fairly unctuous pomp characteristics, though the former happily outweighs the latter, especially by the time that you arrive at the gobsmackingly lovely cosmic jazz finale.

IL BERLIONE-S/T, CD, 1992, JAPAN

Juicily lyrical yet subtly askew, the sound of Japan's avant fusion unit Il Berlione shares a strong rapport with the giddy Big-Swifty-Meets-St.-Alfonso post-Zappa antics of their contemporaries in Tipographica, though Il Berlione's origami-like structures are less maniacally twisty-turny as an end in itself than Tipographica and sometimes reach for fruitily lurid themes or ride the edge of fusionoid flash in a way that can cause nervous sideways glances, though even then, it's always against an undertow of structural peculiarity or manages to rapidly reconfigure its component parts into a spaghetti tangle of quirky inversions.

Leningrad Psychedelic Blues Machine -Dark Star,tape,1996,Japan

Psyched out fuzz monster by some masters of the kind!Leningrand Psychedelic Blues Machine was a meeting of the psych wierdos Leningrand Blues Machine of Tabata Mara with Nanjo Asahito(High Rise,Mainliner,Toho Sara, etc) and Kawabata Makoto. This meeting of acid burned psych minds ended up to a version of Grateful dead's Dark Star.Fuzzed psyched out bass keeping the Dark Star main rhythm while Mr. Makoto's mystical jazzy achievement to psyced out excurtions give as a result a spaced out version of Jerry Garcia's jam.

7 From Life - Souls Of Dead Sharks,tape,1984,USA

Great ambient ritualistic industrial one man project of Lawrence Van Horn.Released through John Zewizz Inner X Musick, this one is more experimental than all other Inner X releases, reminding much in parts early NWW. A very nice recording.

Antediluvian Rocking Horse - Music For The Odd Occasion,CD,1995,Australia

Very strange electronic/experimental band from Australia. As strarting point here we have the outskirts of trance(in their most extreme way)and we continue with dada experiments, psychedelic madness, ethno beats, strange sounds ,cut ups .... First released through Psyharmonics label but then released also by Negativeland's Seeland label(the similarities are more than obvious). The notorious Ollie Olsen is also involved in this project.Great listen!

ALPHABETICAL UPLOADS OF WHACKED OUT SINGLES PT. 15

KLINISCH SAUBER-DER KOMMERZ/DER KRIEG/DER MOND, 1982, SWITZERLAND

Fun (if textbook) Swiss sequence 'n' spiel minimal synthiness somewhat in the mode of fellow Alpine electropop movers Guyers Connection.

KONSTANTIN-SING MIR EIN KLEINES ARBEITERKAMPFLIED/DER KLEINE TROMPETER, 1983, GERMANY

AKA Neue Deutsche Welle operative and Foyer Des Arts member Max Goldt under a pseudonym and engaging here in a sorta genially capering art pop quirk. Nice.

KRANKHAFTE PHANTASTEN-DON'T FOLLOW/ANTI-MEDIOCRE-WORST-RIOT/KRANKHAFTE PHANTASTEN, 198?, USA

Einsturzende Neubauten was the obvious template for the year zero trashcan pound of these NYC art primitives; their corrosively gunked up in-the-red mixes reaching their apotheosis with the eponymous final track that sounds like the mix is being swallowed alive by a king sized hairball on the end of my needle. Missing Foundation and Sink Manhattan were obviously taking cues here.

KURASNAYA ROZA-S/T E.P., FLEXI, 1982, JAPAN

Don't let the first track's unctuously studio slicked and funk-a-poppin' qualities wrongfoot you into dismissing these obscure Japanese proggers. There's a reason that an imprint as associated with Japan's marginal freak fringe as were Cragale decided to issue this flexi, as tracks two and three here furiously whip through some very choice 80's art rock maneuvers that take a page from the best of 80's King Crimson; seemingly the very same page that L.A. avant prog units from the C.O.M.A. universe like Newcross and The Underpeople were taking notes from.

CHRISTOF KURZMANN-SINN BLAU PAUSE, 1995, AUSTRIA

This was the first salvo from this prominent Austrian electronic artist, issued in an edition of 100 copies on the fledgling Syntactic imprint and coming complete with the snazzy velvet bow tie if, like me, you grabbed the artist edition. Kurzmann would go on to become a major presence on the international scene, having co-founded both the Phontaktik festival and the Rhiz club and running the Charizma label alongside recording with the likes of Burkhard Stangl, John Butcher and Ami Yoshida. Way back on his debut here though, he was up to a different sort of mischief, beginning with the fact that, through the mysteries of the cutting process, several segments within the side-long suites that comprise each side here have distinct and separate tracks in the left and right channels that are apparently meant to be heard individually as well. Put together, the results are a curious and uneasy drift between moodily art warped synth pop in the mode of Mark Glynne and Bart Zwier and queasily looping kitsch ephemera ala Tom Recchion.

KWALITAT 100%-S/T E.P. 2003 (RECORDED: 198?), GERMANY

Another excellent Neue Deutsche Welle archival tape find from the redoubtable Was Soll Das? Schallplatten imprint that was reissued in an edition of only 100 copies. The instrumental concoctions created by these cats are definitely off the experimental tip of the minimal synth spectrum and cover a good bit of ground, with overtones of stripped Ike Yard style proto electro and Sky-era Asmus Tietchens robot pop brushing up against hollowed out and alienated Monoton-like atmospheres.
